GridOptimal Initiative – Developing a New Rating System Opportunity

The GridOptimal Initiative will develop a new rating system and metric for building-grid interactions through a collaboration between the US Green Building Council and New Buildings Institute. There are currently no metrics that define building-level grid citizenship, or rate building-grid interaction quality, which consider the impacts of individual buildings on the grid and encourage grid-friendly design and operation. This initiative will bring together key stakeholders and experts to develop standards to help capitalize on opportunities for market transformation.

A technical advisory team with utilities and private partners is being assembled now and they are seeking sponsoring partners as well. The process begins with technical development of a building modeling methodology and utility data framework. Phase 2 will be creating the metric and rating system, with market deployment targeted for 2019. To inquire about participating, contact alexi@newbuildings.org.
