Iowa IOU Could be First to Supply 100% Renewable Energy

MidAmerican Energy plans to invest $922 million in 591 MW of added wind power capacity in Iowa to equal the annual power demand of its customers. MidAmerican would be the first investor-owned electric utility (IOU) in the nation to meet the goal of supplying its customers 100% renewable energy. The utility will still produce electricity from natural gas and coal when wind is not available, however. They expect Wind XII, if approved by the Iowa Utilities Board, to be completed by 2020, and to freeze consumer energy prices – already 37 percent lower than the national average – for about 15 years. MidAmerican will receive $10 billion in federal production tax credits for their wind projects. Iowa ranks 3rd for wind energy generation in the US, currently. Des Moines RegisterUtility DiveClean Technica
