Coal, which is 33 percent of Alliant Energy’s power supply currently, will be eliminated by 2050 according their 2018 Corporate Sustainability Report. Their goal is to reduce carbon emissions 40 percent by 2030 and 80 percent by 2050. They plan to double the use of renewable energy sources to over 30 percent of their energy mix by 2030 and reduce water use by 75 percent. Wind energy will supply the majority of their renewable energy as they invest in six new wind farms by 2020. Alliant will shift to natural gas for their baseload fuel, and are in the process of building a 700 megawatt natural gas-fired power plant in the town of Beloit. No date was given for closing the Columbia power plant near Portage, however. WI State Journal
