North Wind Renewable Energy Cooperative is beginning to install a 105 kW solar array on the City of Beaver Dam’s police department/municipal court building roof. The array will save the City $800,000 over the next 25 years and produce 37 MWh of electricity annually, offsetting approximately 45 percent of the building’s electric load. The $220,000 solar project is being financed entirely by the Couillard Solar Foundation.
This solar project is one of several moving the City toward its Energy Independent Community goal to produce 25 percent of City energy needs with renewable sources locally by 2020 and 35 percent by 2025. Last year Beaver Dam installed a 105 kW solar array on its municipal building (see EnergyOnWI news, October 2018) and did a substantial upgrade to the building’s HVAC system with support from grants from Focus on Energy and the State Office of Energy Innovation respectively.
