Givepower installed the first solar water farm that desalinates ocean water into drinking water in Kiunga, Kenya. A small fishing community of 3,500 people along the coast of the Indian Ocean, Kiunga has been experiencing a five-year drought, which forced them to resort to ocean water for drinking, cooking, and washing.
The solar system can generate 50 kW of energy to power two water pumps, creating enough clean drinking water for 35,000 people a day. The community will have clean water for 20 years from the solar water farm at the cost of $20/person.
This solar water farm technology could serve a critical need on our planet where globally, one in three people lack access to clean drinking water , according to the World Health Organization and UNICEF. Design Boom
