Holy Wisdom Monastery, in Middleton, WI, recently expanded its photovoltaic system, adding 463 solar panels with a capacity of 125.6 kW, to increase generation from 8% to an estimated 60% of the building’s energy needs. The project was funded by a local group of renewable energy investors and Monona State Bank, and received $46,896 in Focus on Energy funding. The monastery’s ultimate goal is to operate at zero net energy but they were hampered by the MG&E 100kW limit on system size allowable per meter combined with the low buy back rate for solar. However, the expansion makes the LEED Platinum building MGE’s largest solar producing customer. For more information
