The Sheboygan Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility is nearly 100% energy self-sufficient. It achieves 40% heat and electricity savings through a combined heat and power system. It has a total of 700 kilowatts of generating capacity from biogas produced from anaerobic digestion. With a total of 700 kilowatts of generating capacity from biogas produced from anaerobic digestion along with a combined heat and power system to generate electricity and heat, the plant generates more than three quarters of its annual energy needs. Then, ten 30 kW micro-turbines burn biogas from its anaerobic digesters to produce nearly 90% of their annual electrical energy and 85% of the annual heat requirements. For more information
