California became the first state to mandate a zero-emission public bus fleet where all new city buses purchased as of 2029 must be fully electric buses. The State’s agencies’ bus fleets are required to meet earlier goals with a quarter of replacements to electric by 2023 and half by 2026.The California Air Resources Board expects to have fully electrified municipal bus fleets by 2040, which would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 19 million metric tons from 2020 to 2050, equivalent to removing 4 million cars from the road.
