100kW ground mounted solar PV array at Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center began operation January 2017 offsetting 42 percent of the Center’s electricity use. Extensive energy efficiency upgrades to the center in early 2017 will likely increase the electricity provided from solar to up to 60 percent of the Center’s electricity needs. The $315,000 photovoltaic system was designed and installed by Bessler Brother’s Electric (MN) and Solicon Technologies. The Center received a US Forest Service grant for capital projects for both the solar and energy efficiency upgrades.
