The Environmental Defense Fund announced a deal to launch a methane-detecting satellite by the nonprofit, MethaneSAT, and an EDF subsidiary. The launch is anticipated for October 2022 on the Falcon 9 rocket from SpaceX. The $88 million satellite project can will should be able to identify methane emissions across large geographic areas and measure them at predetermined locations. The goal of the satellite is to monitor regions that make up more than 80% of global oil and gas production and help companies and countries curb emissions. MethaneSAT and the EDF subsidiary is funded partly by grant money from The Bezos Earth Fund created in 2020. EnergyWire
