Wisconsin Moves to Become the “Silicon Valley” of Nuclear Fusion

Wisconsin is positioning itself as a leader in clean energy innovation through nuclear fusion bolstered by Governor Evers signing two bipartisan bills on July 2nd to boost fusion technology.

The nuclear fusion process is carbon-free and doesn’t create radioactive waste, unlike the current nuclear fission technology.

Senate Bill 125 allocates $2 million to research effective siting of nuclear fusion plants in Wisconsin. Senate Bill 124 will create a board to advance nuclear power and fusion technology and will fund a nuclear summit in Wisconsin in 2028.

Researchers at UW-Madison and Madison-based startup RealtaFusion have developed a fusion device in Stoughton, WI, that replicates the reaction powering the sun. With three fusion companies out of a total of 45 already based in the state and UW-Madison housing one of the world’s top nuclear engineering programs, Wisconsin has the foundation to become a hub for nuclear innovation.
